A Local Guide

Things to do in Abuja.

Abuja has a soft, leafy version of itself that doesn't always make the obvious lists. This is the city we know and love, with the places we send friends, family and visiting clients when they ask what to do here.

1. Spend a slow morning at Jabi Lake

Jabi Lake is the easy first answer to "what should we do today?" Walk the lakeside, hire a boat for half an hour, or simply settle in for breakfast at one of the restaurants overlooking the water. It works for a date, a family outing or a visiting friend who has never been to the city.

2. Wander the Arts & Crafts Village

Tucked behind the Sheraton in the Central Business District, the Arts & Crafts Village is a quiet collection of stalls selling beadwork, leather, woven baskets, fabric and sculpture from across Nigeria. Go in the late afternoon, when the heat softens and the traders have time to talk you through the work.

3. Book a creative afternoon with us

We host guided painting, candle making, pottery, tote bag painting and hand casting sessions at lovely venues across the city. It's a screen-free way to gather a few friends or a small team, and you leave with something you made in your own hand. Our activities page has the full list, or chat to us on WhatsApp if you'd rather just say what kind of afternoon you have in mind.

4. Eat in a garden in Maitama

Maitama's quieter pleasures are its garden restaurants. Cilantro, tucked into the greenery, is the one we keep coming back to for a calm lunch with people we like. Pasha is a lovely choice too, especially in the early evening. Both feel a little like leaving the city without actually leaving the city.

5. Drive up to Aso Rock at golden hour

Aso Rock is best at the end of the day, when the light turns honey-coloured against the granite. You don't need to climb it to enjoy it. A drive out, a slow loop and a stop for photographs is plenty.

6. End the night with karaoke in Gwarinpa

For a louder evening, head to Gwarinpa. Blackstone Karaoke Bar is where our livelier groups end up. We sometimes host a painting session there first, then the room turns to song. It's the kind of night that makes the group chat go quiet for a few hours and then very loud.

7. Reset at Usman Dam

A little further out, Usman Dam offers a proper change of scene. Pack water, wear walking shoes, and go early. It pairs well with a long lunch back in town afterwards.

8. Plan a calmer kind of night out

If a club isn't the energy, a creative evening is a lovely alternative. Candle making in particular is a soft, sensory way to gather a small group. Read more on our wellness page if that's the mood you're after.
